ART PARTY: MADY LUCAS
Art Party is a celebration of the art we create and the story behind it.
Each feature includes a curated list of questions to help you dig deeper into sessions you may see on Instagram and want to learn more about.
If you have a session, series, or collection you would like to celebrate, send me an email with all the details and a link to the gallery.
MEET MADY:
I’m someone who loves the simple things in life, laughs at my own jokes, and finds joy and happiness in moments that often go unnoticed.
Mady is a childcare worker, and I’m currently in my third year of photography, specialising in maternity, newborn and family sessions based in Sydney.
Vibe for the shoot
This maternity session was full of fun props and bright colours, which was definitely the vibe for the shoot! Out of everything we used, the sunflowers were by far my favourite. They added so much warmth and life to the images, which was exactly what I had envisioned. Against the coastal backdrop, they created a beautiful contrast and helped bring a fun, creative feel to the final gallery.
Third pregnancy
This was Mum’s third and final pregnancy, so for this session I wanted it to be all about her. I wanted her to be fully present in the moment whilst I captured the little moments she may not have thought needed to be documented. My goal was to preserve this final chapter authentically and leave her feeling confident, empowered and celebrated.
Trial and error…
There were a few small things that were a bit tricky during the session. Some of the props I brought along didn’t work out quite as well as I expected on the day. I know it’s all trial and error, but with the outdoor lighting at certain times, it didn’t really allow those props to shine the way the sunflowers did.
Looking back, I think I would tweak things to be more intentional with what I bring next time. Leaning into what props suit the light and the overall feel of the location.
Relaxed and Natural
Maternity and newborn sessions are definitely my favourite type of sessions to capture! There’s just something really special about being able to capture the precious moments that go by so quickly. A personal goal for these sessions is to keep things really natural and relaxed, and to be present to capture the in-between moments.
Dream Shoot
The list has a few, but next on my dream shoot list is a maternity session in a grassy field with a beautiful horse at sunset. With a flowy white skirt, a cosy knit cardigan and a pair of gumboots, it’s an idea I can’t wait to bring to life! I’m not exactly sure where this dream shoot idea came from, but there’s something about the combination of motherhood, open fields and horses that I can’t get out of my head. It’s definitely next on the list!
