Why portraits in Bali?
Simply put, I see ancient wisdom in Balinese faces that truly captivates me. It lives behind their eyes, in the lines on their skin, and tells stories that need no words.
Does our Western approach to aging differ from how they see it in Bali?
Absolutely! Our Western culture constantly encourages us to ‘reverse the signs of ageing ’, erasing our lines with lotions and injections, and telling us that wrinkles and grey hair are things to be hidden rather than celebrated. The Balinese seem to have a different understanding of ageing - an acceptance that growing older is a blessing and simply part of the journey. Elders are honoured for the years they have lived, the wisdom they have gathered, and the stories etched into their faces.
Would you shoot these portraits here?
I would love to photograph more portraits here in Australia, especially in rural country towns where people seem more real, raw and down to earth. Perhaps it’s cultural, but the Balinese have a warmth and openness we don’t seem to share here in Australia, and that makes approaching them with a camera feel easy and natural. Balinese are always willing to pause and share a moment.
What inspires you?
Travel and adventure are what I live for! There is something so completely fulfilling about discovering new places and seeing them for the first time. I particularly find myself captivated and inspired by the country I am so blessed to call my home - its raw beauty, untouched landscapes, and the amazing wildlife that inhabits it.
Besides nature and travel, it seems I am also inspired by people who are living their truest lives, the ones who are unafraid to be who they are and step outside the conformity of society to live out their dreams.
Colour or B&W?
Most of my edits are in colour, but there’s just something about a black & white portrait that I find incredibly beautiful.
Black & White edits often reveal something deeper in people’s faces and the stories behind them, letting light, shadows, and finer details shine through.
Do you have a favourite from this collection?
From the black-and-white series, it would have to be the lady with her hand over her face. Living on a tiny island off Bali, she spoke not a word of English. When I motioned with my camera, ‘photo’? she acknowledged ‘yes’ with shyness. I told her she was ‘beautiful’, and she gently put her hand over her face. When I showed her the photos I took, her face lit up with a smile.
